Implementing an Enclosure Bed: Safety and Savings

Article by Jessica Cruz, RN, BSN, APSM, General Medicine

Yale New Haven Health

Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) piloted the Soma Safe Enclosure in two high-risk units to reduce patient falls and constant companion usage. Using a structured Plan-Do-Study-Act model, the team implemented and evaluated the enclosure bed over two months. The result was a 48% reduction in falls and a savings of nearly 2,000 sitter hours, equating to over $21,000 in cost savings. Based on these positive outcomes, YNHH expanded the use of the enclosure bed to improve safety, comfort, and dignity for at-risk patients.

A Randomized Clinical Trial to Compare the Use of Safety Net Enclosures with Standard Restraints in Agitated Hospitalized Patients

Article by Sandeep Kochar, MD

Griffin Hospital

In a randomized controlled trial at Griffin Hospital, researchers compared the Soma Safe Enclosure to standard physical restraints for managing agitation in hospitalized patients. The study found that the Soma bed was associated with greater patient safety, increased comfort, and improved perceptions among healthcare staff, patients, and families. Results showed higher satisfaction, reduced use of additional restraints, and fewer adverse events, supporting the Soma bed as a more humane, effective alternative for patients requiring additional safety measures during hospitalization.

  • I just wanted to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for all your efforts in assisting Maddie during her stay at your hospital. Her rapid recovery was greatly influenced by her having that amazing bed.

Because no person(s) had to lift Maddie from bed to wheelchair and/or commode, the bed was a tremendous help in that Maddie was not jolted around, did not run the risk of being hurt in the transfer process, and most importantly, made the transfers so easy that her needs were met with ease and less anxiety. Amazingly enough, by the end of her stay at the hospital, Maddie was able to make the transfer to her chair by herself. This made her feel confident and independent which were a gift to her at this time. Maddie has made incredible progress and thankfully she is home, going through physical therapy, going to school, and is sleeping in her own bed. We will never forget all the efforts of so many lending a hand in Maddie’s progress and recovery.
