Indications for Use

Patients considered eligible for the Soma Safe Enclosure must meet all hospital-defined criteria for restraint use. Appropriate indications include:
 

Age Requirements: Patients aged 5 years and older, with no upper age limit.
Size Requirements:

• Weight: More than 46 pounds, less than 300 pounds
• Height: Taller than 45 inches, shorter than 6 feet 4 inches

Diagnoses and Conditions that may make the Soma Safe Enclosure appropriate:

• Delirium from any cause (including withdrawal or medical conditions)
• Confusional states
• Neurological impairment due to anesthesia
• Lack of comprehension of instructions
• Agitation or disruptive behavior requiring restraints
• Psychosis, hallucinations, or delusions needing acute intervention
• Suicidal patients who otherwise would require restraint (only in conjunction with a sitter)

Common Underlying Conditions May Include:

• Alzheimer’s, Dementia
• Traumatic Brain Injury
• Seizure Disorders
• Hydrocephalus
• Developmental Disabilities
• Spasms
• Fall Risk or Wandering
• Huntington’s Disease
• Cerebral Palsy
• Rett’s Syndrome
• Parkinson’s Disease
• Strokes (CVA)
• Substance Abuse Withdrawal
• Difficulty maintaining balance or equilibrium
   

Contraindications

The Soma Safe Enclosure is not appropriate for patients with the following conditions or circumstances:

• Patients requiring acute respiratory or cardiac support (ventilators, vasopressors, septic shock)
• Documented claustrophobia
• Patients or family members who refuse consent for its use
• Acutely ill patients needing intubation or ventilatory support
• Terminal conditions with prognosis under 24 hours (per attending physician)
• Patients with two or more limbs already restrained to protect IV lines
• Extreme agitation requiring continuous IV sedation or anesthesia
• Patients restrained only to protect IV lines who are not agitated or delirious
• Patients with burrowing behavior or excessive PICA unless under frequent observation
• Those at risk of mechanical suffocation or ingesting dangerous objects (e.g., IV lines, plastic, bedding)
• Improper uses such as punishment, isolation, or situations lacking adequate supervision
